What is cat skiing? It’s certainly not strapping a leash from your waist to big wild cats that pull your body as you ski.
Cat skiing entails an uphill snowcat ride to the backcountry for pristine skiing and snowboarding conditions.
Cat Skiing vs. Heliskiing
Some mistake cat skiing as the poor man’s heliskiing. Why? Perhaps because it doesn’t seem as thrilling (nor as expensive) as a helicopter ride to remote terrain for fresh pow.
Say that to a group of friends who are hootin’ and hollerin’ in their comfy snowcat as they head up the mountain and watch the scenic views.
On a good powder day, snowcats will brave the backcountry while helicopters might be stuck on the ground due to poor weather conditions that disable take-off. Good ol' snowcats won't let you down.
Who Can Do It?
We have three snowcat partners in Whistler: Powder Mountain, who also offers heliskiing. Blackcomb Snowmobile offers the full cat skiing experience, while Canadian Snowmobile offers a scenic snowcat tour with mountaintop fondue dinner.
Intermediate to expert skiers and snowboarders can go cat skiing; there is no particular age restriction for the fondue snowcat tour, but it is an adult atmosphere and not recommended for children.
