 Local Tips

Focus on Whistler Mountain

Best afternoon run and lift Bear Paw and Tokum are mostly shaded and lightly skiied making for good afternoon skiing. Save energy for your end of day Peak to Creek run. If you weren"t tired before, you will be at the end of this run. If you still have energy, you can go up the Gondola and do the Dave Murray Downhill one more time.
Best lunch strategy Find your table in the Roundhouse by 11:20. Multiple food outlets offer Asian, Italian, traditional grilled food, vegetarian options and lots more. After 11:20 try Chick Pea or the lodge at Big Red. After 11:45, take the Peak to Peak to Rendezvous or Glacier Lodge on Blackcomb for lunch.
Best morning run and lifts Ski Harmony early. Crowds arrive around 10:30. Big Red is always good and a great warm up. Garbanzo is the hidden gem with never a lift line. Ski down Dave Murray to Bear Paw or Tokum.
Best photo op As you exit the Peak Chair, Black Tusk provides a spectacular background for your group photo.
Best place to park In our free underground parking.
Tips 4 quick & easy access to the lifts in the AM Stay at Creekside! We have no lift lines all day!

Food and Beverage

Best place for breakfast/brunch Waffles at the Crystal Hut on Blackcomb
Best place to drink coffee and surf the net! On our patio.
Best table where you will find a view! Rendevous lodge on Blackcomb Mountain.
Favorite Pub/Bar Dusty's has live music every night during the ski season. But the locals go to Roland's Creekside Pub. Kids are welcome at both until 8p.
Favorite up-scale restaurant The Rock Creek Cafe is by far the best in Whistler. Reservations are mandatory.

For Skiers and Boarders Only

Best ways to find out about weather and snow Conditions can be viewed on the Whistler website or by calling 604 932 4211.
My top skiing/boarding tips for visitors Ski Blackcomb Glacier at least once.

My Money Saving Tips

Cheapest times to come to Whistler Spring and summer are great skiing and discounts are available on lift tickets and lodging.
My biggest money saving tips The Whistler Blackcomb EDGE card provides significant savings on lift tickets, rentals, lessons and food in the ski lodges for BC and Washington residents. See the WB website for details.

The Drive to Whistler

My safety tips for drivers new to Hwy 99 This is an excellent road with $800 million in improvements reducing the drive from West Vancouver to Whistler to about 80 minutes. Watch for cyclists in summer.
Where to get the best views The views are continuous and spectacular. Don't be the driver if you like to look at the views. This road is good, but requires your attention at all times.

The Not So Obvious Types of Tips!

Recommended winter clothing Whistler has 1500 meters ( 5000 feet) of vertical. For example: that means temperatures can vary from -17C (0F) at the top to -9C (18F) at the bottom. Layers are the key. More at the top, less at the bottom. Dry conditions at the top, less so at the bottom. Parkas that have ventilation zips are great.

Frequently Asked Questions

Driving to Whistler

I've heard the road to Whistler can be challenging? British Columbia has recognized that the road between Horseshoe Bay and Whistler was substandard and has dedicated one billion dollars to upgrades. The road has seen substantial improvements cutting a half hour off the two hour drive. The road is now excellent and is well maintained. Like any mountain highway care is required during inclement weather. The views along Howe Sound are spectacular.

Snow quality

Is the snow quality as variable as I've read? Yes. A typical ski area only has 500 meters of vertical and the snow will be of similar quality top to bottom. Whistler has 1500 meters of vertical and is the largest ski area in North America. That means that there can be three or four different climate zones. The driest, coldest snow will be at the top. Fortunately, one can stay on top all day. There are lodges and lifts to support all your needs without returning to the base. December through March skiing is excellent top to bottom.
Does Whistler groom its slopes daily? The busiest slopes and trails are groomed every day. All trails and slopes except the expert bowls and chutes are groomed every other day.

Privately owned lodging

Isn't it risky renting from private owners? We have rented private homes worldwide for ourselves and it has never been a problem. We use Alluradirect to handle our secure credit transactions. This protects your credit info. We never see any of your credit information. You always have recourse if we don't deliver a satisfactory accommodation.
Why don't we bill you for the combined 10% hotel and resort tax? Managers of multiple units are required to charge the 10% tax. We do not as we are renting only our vacation home.

Restaurants & Groceries

Are there restaurants at Creekside? There are 10 restaurants within 3 minutes walk of the Lodge. These include the upscale "Zen" Japanese, Morgans, , the funky "Dustys" for barbeque and live music (families can dine and watch from the balcony after 7pm), the only Chinese Fusion restaurant in Whistler and the Southside Diner for burgers and grilled foods. Bake at home pizza and Subway round out the local eateries. 5 minutes walk is Hoz's Pub, El Tipo (Mexican), Uli's Flipside serving Canadian westcoast cuisine and gourmet pizzas.
Are the grocery stores nearby? There are two stores within 2 minutes walk. The larger store is open from 8AM to 8PM everday and has an excellent assortment of groceries including fresh fruits, bakery, vegetables and meats. There is also a deli in the store. The smaller store is a convenience store, longer hours, less fresh, more packaged items and over the counter drugs.
Where can I get my latte and a scone? Starbucks is the place, just across the street. Limited seating, but there is usually space except around the gondola opening and closing times.

Transportation

Can I get to Whistler without a car? Perimeter and Greyhound coaches (about $90 round trip for adults) run several times each day and stop near the front entrance to LK Placid Lodge. There are vans ($350 one-way), limousine ($500 and up one-way) and helicopter ($1800 each way for 4) services from Vancouver. Expensive, but you get the whole vehicle unlike the coaches. All except the helicopter take about 2 hours from Vancouver International Airport.
Where is the train station? The train station is located three blocks from Lake Placid Lodge.
How hard is it to get around Whistler without a car? The local WAVE #1 & #2 (Creekside) buses run about every ten minutes during the day and 15 minutes in the evening until 3 AM for those late nights out. The cost is $1.50 each way exact change. Ski and bike racks on every bus. In the summer, the main village is about ten minutes bike ride and 30 minutes on foot on the Valley Trail system. There are taxis available.
How hard is it to get to Blackcomb? It takes 12 minutes using the WAVE shuttle bus or 10 minutes riding the Creekside Gondola up and 10 minutes skiing down to the Blackcomb Gondola. More fun this way.

Summer activities

What free summer activites are there? There is a swimming beach with a playground about ten minutes walk down LK Placid Drive next to the train station. Valley Trails start here and biking, roller blading and walking are allowed. The system is about 20 Kilometers long and ends near Green Lake. Hiking the mountains is popular with Garbaldi Provincial Park bordering Whistler.

My kids are bored

My kids are bored, what next? There is always the pool at Lk Placid Lodge and the large lobby with comfortable couches and a lot of running around space. And there is climbing toy next to the grocery store that is popular with the smaller kids. For bigger kids there are theatres in the Village showing first run movies including several rated for kids. A indoor climbing facility can be found in the Village too. Maybe the kids need a day away from the parents, try "Whistler Kids" across the street.

Winter Activities

What else is there to do at Whistler? Ice skating, squash and a fitness center are available at the Meadow Park Sports Center. Public skating on most afternoons and some Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturday evenings. And minor league hockey games for the sports fans. Call 604 935 7529 for info.

 About Us

We are avid skiers living and working in Washington State.  Our condominium is privately owned and we decided to share our ski place with guests who are looking for a more personal experience than hotels can offer.  We selected our vacation home based on its access to the mountain and the less commercial atmosphere of Creekside.  Creekside is the original home of the Garibaldi Lift Company, the first lifts on Whistler Mountain and the 2010 Olympic and ParaOlympic Alpine events.
