 Local Tips

Just for Kids!

Best rainy day kids activities Rent videos and bring out the snacks. Play games, (we have lots). Go to the Meadow Park Leisure Center for a skate (you can rent skates), or a swim in their amazing pool with cool features for kids. Pick up some art supplies from the art store near the IGA and get creative. Go bowling or play video games at Alpenglow. Try the indoor climbing wall.
Cool playgrounds There"s a neat climbing structure near the IGA, there"s a little log treehouse at Nita Lake, the water park and playground at Meadow Park is wonderful, the school has a playground too.
Great kids activities Same as above, but in good weather go biking (check out Allura discounts for rentals), to the lakes for a swim, hiking, make snowmen, go sledding (we have a small sled), hit the water park at Meadow Park, do all the activities at Blackcomb... mini golf, climbing walls, trapeze, luge ride, bungee trampoline.
Great places to eat with kids Mc Donalds (yuck.. but they like it), Carumba"s for a nice meal, Mongolie Grill (they design their own stir fry), Earls, order in pizza, The Old Spagetti Factory, Subway
Recommended kids clothing If you"re skiing, bring lots of warm clothes, layers work best. Polar fleece is great under coats. Our snow can be wet, so bring extra mittens if you"re playing outside. You can purchase anything you"ve forgotten up there, but prices can be high, so bring all you can from home. Helmets can be rented. Bring goggles or sunglasses and sunscreen. Don"t forget a bathing suit.
Recommended kids programs The Ski school is where you will want your kids to be. They can spend the day skiing or boarding at whatever level they"re at, and meet lots of nice kids of a similar age. The instuctors are so friendly and kind. My kids love it, and I love the break. There"s also a program in the summer for kids there where they do all sorts of neat day trips.
Tips for dropping kids off at programs If you"re renting equipment, go to the ski school the afternoon before (call and find out when) and get everything then. It saves tons of time and confusion the next morning. We take the bus right to the base of Blackcomb, and my kids go to that program. They meet their instructors outside. The little kids and babies go right inside. Be on time for pick-up if you can, and you can still have time for a couple of quick runs with your kids.
What kids should bring A favorite toy or blanket, clothes for all types of weather, good shoes or boots for walking, and their imaginations! There is a toy store and an art store, a couple of book stores, and clothing stores, so if you forget something, don"t worry.

On a Personal Note

Our best Whistler story I had a spectacular fall racing my daughter one day, and now when any of us wipe out, we call it "doing a Vicky". Please don"t feel you have to do "a Vicky" too! On a more personal note, Whistler is where we announced to our oldest daughter ( on more than one occasion) that she was going to have a sibling... a very special memory for us all.
Our favourite season in Whistler and why. It"s hard to pick one season, of course winter is fabulous, spring skiing is bliss, we love lazy summer days by the lake or on our bikes, but I think I love fall the best when we go up for Thanksgiving. We take great long walks, the air is crisp and cool, and sometimes even stormy, and I love the cozy feeling of being away from it all, with a delicious meal cooking and a fire crackling.
What makes Whistler so special and unique? Whistler is constantly trying to get better at everything it does, and we see improvements every time we are up. It"s great now that one company owns both mountains. We like to ski both mountains in the same day, and we are always greeted by the friendliest staff. The ski school is amazing, both for kids as well as adults, and you meet people from all over the world who love the outdoors as much as you.

 About Us

We bought our place in 1991, when our daughter was 2 years old. We were looking for vacation property, and decided on Whistler because it is an all-season resort. We now have 3 daughters, all of whom play soccer. We live in Vancouver, and soccer is played all winter, thus our family uses our place more in the summer. We love it for swimming at the lakes, and cycling with our kids. Our children have been attending ski school since they were very young, and love the holidays we take in the Spring to brush up on our skiing. Our eldest is taking up snowboarding, and Marc and I like to sneak off for some cross-country skiing as well as downhill. Marc is a Sports Physiotherapist and his training comes in very handy after a day on the slopes!
