Excellent location. Corner unit with fabulous views of Whistler and Blackcomb and complete privacy. Easily slept 8 - 2 couples and 4 kids in one room with bunkbeds. Kitchen was well equipped. Hot tub was fun. Living space was very open but a bit cramped. We will definitely return.

Worst Whistler home rental experience in 15 years

Can not recommend this unit due to very unpleasant and inappropriate behavior of the owner.

We've been visiting Whistler since 2004. We have always had pleasant, issue-free stays at every house we've rented. Until this year. Our preferred home in Montebello was already booked for part of the 9 days of our visit. So we looked for another unit in the development. We found this one. Unfortunately, the owner of this unit- Steve, was very unpleasant and difficult to deal with.

Check in was not smooth. We received several emails prior to our visit with the name and contact info of the previous owner (who sold this house to Steve 2 years ago). We contacted this person thinking he was the current owner. He responded to our email almost immediately and informed us that he was not the owner. Steve, the actual owner, was much slower to respond. We had to email/text him at least 5 times over the course of several days just to get the check-in information and door code. There's no reason for the owner to be sending out information to contact the previous owner. Steve has had 2 years to correct this issues and he has not. We also shouldn't have to track down this basic check-in information from the owner prior to our arrival.

When we checked in, the driveway and entrance to the house were covered in several inches of very slick ice. It was clear that snow and ice had not been shoveled and no ice melt had been applied in quite some time. We usually rent another house in Montebello before and have never experienced this issue. There was no shovel or tools or salt in the house to remove the ice. We emailed Steve about the ice and he did not respond. The other home we rent in Montebello has several snow shovels and salt- basic provisions for any winter rental.

We also noticed that all the prep lights in the kitchen were burned out (3 light bulbs). Half of the light bulbs in the living room were also burned out, but our primary concern was the kitchen lights as our visit was 9 days long and we intended to do a lot of cooking in the house. We contacted Steve about the burned out light bulbs and again about the ice (which he still had not responded to. Steve responded with this....

  • Steve - "We have our regular maintenance scheduled in 10 days which will address the light bulbs"
  • We replied - "We will not be here in 10 days. The light bulbs need to be replaced today"
  • Steve replied - "No the light bulbs will not be replaced today. It's not feasible to get somebody in for a one off light bulb change."

We then told Steve that we paid over $6,000 to have functioning light bulbs in the kitchen and that his attitude a responses were inappropriate and unacceptable. Steve took no action to resolve any issue until after we told him we would immediately escalate the issues to Allura.

To sum up the experience- Steve's behavior was inexcusably and extremely greedy and inappropriate. The counters in the kitchen are pretty dim without functioning lights, making cooking and prep more difficult and less pleasant than it should be. There's no excuse for the half the lights in the living room and all of the countertop kitchen lights to be burned out. Especially when paying over $6,000 for a one week stay. Rather than give a single care about the comfort and value provided to his guests, Steve is more concerned with nickel-and-diming his guests and squeezing every penny he can out of them.

Steve's response to the lack of snow shovel was equally ridiculous. He would not provide a snow shovel for us. This meant that when it repeatedly snowed during our visit, we had to improvise and use a baking sheet to remove significant amounts of snow from the entrance, the back patio, the hot tub and around the hot tub just to be able to use it. This is insane. Steve could easily purchase a $20 snow shovel if he wanted to, making the stay of his guests much more pleasant. Instead, he expected us to contact him every time we wanted snow removed, wait for him to respond, then wait for him to contact some HOA or property management company to come and shovel snow. By Steve's logic, we are expected to wait 1 to several days for someone to come shovel the snow just so we can use the hot tub or have a clear entrance to the house. This is beyond absurd.

Overall, Steve's greed and very inappropriate behavior made our stay unnecessarily unpleasant. In 15 years of visiting Whistler and renting vacation homes, we have never experienced anything like this. We will never be renting from Steve again and absolutely recommend that you look elsewhere. There are plenty of other units in Montebello that are far better maintained, show far, far less wear and tear (on the furniture, railings, walls, broken electrical outlet covers, etc. ) and have far more pleasant owners. Almost every one of these units, with an identical floorplan, also rent for less than what Steve charges.

Bunk Beds & Slow Deposit Refund

I have happily rented this property for many years. It recently changed owners and there are two facts that disrupted my vacation experience.

  1. The room with the two twin beds is not as it appears. There are two bunk beds that can sleep 4 people. I never checked the new reviews since I rented the place for several years before with no issues. However, I noticed someone else brought this up before me. I NEVER would have rented it that way since there are no children in my group and we are hardly renting a luxury place to live like we are in college.
  2. It took almost two months (and many emails) for me to get a refund of the security deposit. Even then, it took me going to Allura to get it.

I will say the response time of AlluraDirect was amazing and they took care of my deposit issue within the same day of me notifying them of the challenges with the owner. I will definitely rent from AlluraDirect again, but unfortunately will have to find a new unit. It's really unfortunate given the new furniture is very nice, but the setup and service didn't measure up with my prior experience.

Serious problems should be reported with supporting photographs. We will make our best efforts to rectify problems within 24 hours of notification. Failure to notify us of property-related problems while in the property and as they become evident, will forfeit any rights or claims against us regarding property condition after your departure.
Excessive Noise Excessive Noise from the property or its commen premises is not permitted after 11PM. Occupants may be evicted subsequent to noise complaints and will be charged for resulting damages.
