This season, skiers and snowboarders at Whistler Blackcomb will be using the brand new RFID scanners to gain entry into the lifts. This new technology will be in full effect for Winter 2014/15 after a pilot run at the Bike Park in early September.
Hands-free Lift Entry with RFID
Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID), consists of a small chip and an antenna embedded on your your ticket, EDGE Card or Season Pass. This ‘tag’ will have the power to transmit information over to the scanners without lifties having to physically scan the card. Whistler Blackcomb assures that no personal information will be stored in the RFID tags, and all information communicated wirelessly would be transferred in code form. The new RFID cards are designed to work within a few feet of the scanner, which will allow hands-free access to the lifts – less fumbling for passes means shorter wait times.
Riders are reminded to keep your new passes on a separate pocket from your other electronic devices, specifically on the left side of your body. These new RFID enabled passes will be reusable and re-loadable, but there is a replacement fee for lost or damaged cards, so be careful about punching those holes! These RFID passes are meant to survive many washes, jumps, wipe-outs, bungee jumps and zip line rides.
Whistler Blackcomb will officially open for the winter season on November 27, 2014.
