The PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola is now officially part of the 2015 Guinness Book of World Records for the titles of “Highest Cable Car Above Ground” and “Longest Unsupported Span Between Two Cable Car Towers“.
The PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola, Whistler’s World Famous Engineering Wonder
This massive resort undertaking in connecting the Whistler Mountain Alpine with Blackcomb Mountain’s peak took almost two years to construct before finally opening in 2008. At it’s highest point, it sits at 436 m (1427 ft) above Fitzsimmons Creek. The whole gondola spans 4.4 km, 3.024 of which is unsupported. (Photo Credit: Jon Wick)
The PEAK 2 PEAK is open almost all year round, with the exception of a few transitional weeks in the spring (between April and May), and in autumn (between November and October). The PEAK 2 PEAK has 28 cabins in total, and for the ultimate sightseeing experience, there are two sky cabins with glass floors to allow visitors to peek all the way down Fitzsimmons creek at the bottom. A raised walkway was also constructed in 2013 to show guests a bird’s-eye view of this amazing engineering marvel. The viewing gallery is located at the terminal on Whistler Mountain’s side.
