We owe it to the bountiful sunshine and dry weather that the alpine hiking trails in Whistler opened 4 weeks ahead of schedule. The alpine flowers are in full bloom, the hoary marmots are out and about and the summer activities are in full swing at Whistler Blackcomb!
Almost all alpine trails are open, and for this weekend, June 27th, the Peak Chair will be open to all hikers. The peak chair will give guests access to the Whistler Summit Interpretive Walk, Matthew’s and Pika’s Traverse. If you head up earlier in the season, you may be able to catch the snow walls, which can be up to 10m (32 ft) high!
Hiking trails range from easy (green),intermediate (blue), and difficult (black); catering to all ages and fitness levels. New this year is the addition of RFID timed trails so you can track your progress and get competitive with all the fellow hikers around. Your summer alpine pass also includes unlimited access to the world record holding PEAK2PEAK Gondola. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Fitzsimmons Creek separating Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains, and watch thisamazing engineering marvel via the viewing platform by the Roundhouse Lodge, on the Whistler Mountain.
Additionally summer glacier and boarding is open from June 20 – July 26, 2015 on Blackcomb Mountain’s Horstman Glacier. To access the glacier, riders must upload on Wizard Express, Transfer to Solar Coaster Express then take a transfer shuttle to 7th Heaven Express. Because of the ever changing conditions in the alpine, skiers and snowboarders are advised to be prepared; have sunscreen, sunglasses, gloves and a jacket just in case. Whistler Blackcomb is launching a pilot project this year to install snow-making facilities on the Horstman Glaciers to counteract the effects of global warming on the retreating glacier.
