Approximately 1,200 runners expected to fill Whistler Village and the Whistler Olympic Plaza on Saturday, October 20th 2012, as they participate in the second annual Whistler 50 Relay and Ultra Race. After replacing the 100km Harrison Relay and Ultra in 2011, the Whistler 50 Relay and Ultra is expected to grow significantly over the next two to four years to attract a similar number of people & athletes that took part in the Haney to Harrison Relay.
In its second year, the Whistler 50 Relay and Ultra will feature several changes to improve the race and the overall weekend event. The biggest change is that this year’s race has been moved up two weeks from an expected November 3rd date to Saturday, October 20th in an attempt to avoid any weather/snow conflicts.
The post-event awards have also been moved to the Sunday morning at the Whistler Conference Centre to avoid any conflict or interference with the post-race celebrations. The course map is the same as 2011, but the start and the second transition is now located at the Whistler Olympic Plaza, likely to draw more interested spectators than last year. Interested participants can still register for the weekend event on the BC Athletics website. An eight person team includes $720 and includes a ticket to the pre-race social event, the awards ceremony and Whistler 50 Relay and Race gear.
The entire event takes place from Friday, October 19th to Sunday, October 21st with the pre-race social opening on Friday night from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Brewhouse at Whistler. The race awards for the ultra-runners are on Saturday night from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Whistler Conference Centre, followed by a large after-party from 8 p.m. to midnight. The remaining Whistler 50 Relay and Ultra awards will be handed out on Sunday morning from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Whistler Conference Centre.
