Big White, one of the world’s top family ski resorts, is jumping into the extreme side of winter activities with the launch of a new series of ice climbing clinics and competitions. Back in 2010, the Big White Ski Resort added a new après ski activities with the addition of a brand new man-made ice tower, attracting on lookers wanting to tackle the icy vertical climb.
Considered one of the top physical winter activities, the Big White Tower has attracted thousands of people of all ages interested in climbing the frozen tower. Custom built by Corporate Heights, the Big White tower is built with a cross-section of four telephone poles braced together. After the tower is flooded with water, it becomes a vertical climb of three feet of solid ice.
Ice Climbing For Everyone…
The ice tower at Big White is designed for all levels of climbers with four sides, one for beginners and three for more advanced climbers. Advanced ice climbers have the privilege of 19 different routes to choose from. Big White’s Ice Climbing Series will feature three winter clinics, led by Canadian ice climbing experts, and an international Ice Climbing competition featuring Canmore resident, X-Games champion, and Red Bull athlete, Will Gadd.
Not only is Big White the only winter resort in B.C. to offer the unique experience of ice climbing, but they are also the only winter resort in North America. A series of three-two day courses will start in mid-January, including a women’s-only weekend Jan. 26 and 27. Even if you’re not interested in participating, this will be a great event for all family members to enjoy for a weekend holiday in Big White.
