7 Ways to Experience Whistler’s 2013 WSSF in Whistler Village

Whistler’s World Ski and Snowboard Festival (WSSF) is next month and we have some great ways for you to enjoy 10 amazing days and 10 epic nights in Whistler Village (April 12-21) at the largest celebration of mountain culture in North America. Whistler’s WSSF is much more than just large parties, loud concerts, and winter sport competitions. In fact, it features a lot of winter industry aspects such as music, art, and fashion events for outdoor enthusiasts who are passionate about the mountain lifestyle.

Filmmaker

The most talked about event each year, the OLYMPUS 72 Hour Filmmaker Showdown, is open to anyone who wants to participate and test their competitive film and creative skillset. Contestants get 3 days (72 hours) to shoot, edit, and produce a three to five minute short film within a 100km radius of Whistler. Participants are challenged to use their skillset of originality, speed, and endurance to perform for a grand prize of $10,000. Selected winning films will be shown to an audience of 1,500 people on Tuesday, April 16 followed by an encore presentation on Wednesday, April 17.

Registration for interested filmmakers is now open until April 5th.

Photographer

Continuing the creative trend at WSSF is the sold-out photographer’s highlight of the OLYMPUS Pro Photographer Showdown where some of the most talented global sports action photographers demonstrate some of their work from around the world. Featured in a nine minute slideshow, per participant, photographers get to showcase photos from ski and snowboard photography to surfing, biking, skateboarding, climbing, and lifestyle. The grand prize winner for Best in Show will receive $10,000 while runner-ups receive a $1,500.

Artist

Passionate artists who love the mountain lifestyle will showcase their work at a free State of the ART exhibit in the Grand Foyer of the Whistler Conference Centre. The exhibit will be open all 10 days of WSSF and kicks off at the opening party on April 12. While the deadline for submissions has now closed, the gallery will be open from 12-pm daily during the World Ski and Snowboard Festival.

Fashion

 

Male and female models will be showcasing the idea of swagger in the 8th anniversary of Fashion EXPOSED. This year’s theme of swagger is meant to encourage a style of confidence, coolness, and togetherness. Fashion EXPOSED is a free event for the general public on Saturday, April 20th. Casting calls for models that are confident enough to showcase leading street, snow, and surf brands will take place in early March.

Musician

For years, WSSF has attracted some of the music industry’s biggest talents to the largest annual Outdoor Concert Series in Canada. Thus far, some of the top musical talents announced for the 2013 WSSF Outdoor Concert Series include Swollen Members and K-OS.

Action Sports Filmmaker

 

This year’s Intersection at the World Ski and Snowboard Festival will feature five to seven minute extreme sports action films shot by participants competing over a seven day period. Challenged with the added time pressure, filmmakers will showcase their shooting, editing, and producing skills by also featuring a skier or snowboarder, 30 seconds of terrain park footage, and 30 seconds of footage from Whistler Blackcomb in-bounds terrain. Contestants must shoot the entire film within 100km of Whistler, with 75% of the film taking place on snow. The winning team who is successful at showcasing and wowing audiences will take home $15,000 for their efforts, while runner-up teams will receive $1,000.
