Delightful retreat in the mountains - second year

Jacqueline from Calgary, Canada
Date: Apr-12-2016 for a stay in Oct 2015

Second year in a row that we have gone out for thanksgiving (think previous review was under another username). This is a great house with more than enough room for all of us. The second year we were there we ended up being much more lazy and spent some time watching movies and relaxing in the lounge. Enough room for all of us to relax for the one morning. Still a great selection of pots and pans for cooking a big thanksgiving meal.

We were lucky enough that there was some big rains before we were out there and the fire ban was over so we could enjoy a fire. Just love this house and looking forward to many future adventures out there.

Delightful retreat in the mountains

Jacqueline from Calgary, Canada
Date: Apr-04-2016 for a stay in Oct 2014

For a second year in a row we have now been to stay for a long weekend in October. It is the same group of us that go back every year and we just love this house. It sleeps 10 people comfortably without any issues, but so far have only had 7 of us stay at one time. Space wise the only time it gets crowded is when we all insist on eating aroud the dining room table instead of using the kitchen island too.

The house is immaculate and very well taken care of. Every cooking utensil or pan you may need is on hand. Most helpful when we cook our big Sunday dinner. The fire pit outside is well maintained and the supply of ready to burn wood is unending. With the river just down the road for a walk in the afternoon and hot tub on the deck, you are covered for any activity you may need. Also there is a large BBQ on the deck should you wish to use that. This is our favorite retreat and can see how it would be a very attractive option if you ski as it is so close to Kicking Horse. Great for families with kids or just a group of friends enjoying time together.

There is a gentleman named Dan who stays in the basement suite and looks after the house. If we have ever had any questions he has been available for us and is really friendly. Fill of great information on the area and knowledge of what you can if you haven't been to Golden before. Really lovely guy and catching up with him every year has been great too.

Value for money this is a clear winner. Hope to keep coming back fro years to come.

Great Family Vacation Spot

Kendra from Calgary, Canada
Date: Jan-06-2015 for a stay in Dec 2014

Our family rented the Bear Paw Lodge over the Christmas holidays and very much enjoyed our time. The house was well equipped, clean, and comfortable for all 9 of us. Jim Hewlett was very helpful and quick to respond with any questions I had before our arrival. The process was very smooth and the on location property manager, Dan, was happy to answer any questions we had after arrival. The location of the lodge was perfect for lots of snowshoeing, hiking, and jogging trails. It is about 40 minutes away from Kicking Horse ski hill, which made Christmas Eve skiing possible. The hot tub is a great amenity to the lodge with a beautiful view of the mountains. Dan also provided us with the tools to chop down our own Christmas tree! I would highly recommend the lodge to anyone looking for a quiet and relaxing getaway with friends or family.

Gods Back Yard .. revisited

DrLawn from Cambridge
Date: Dec-11-2014

I love this place. I was there back in January, but I had a chance to go again, so I jumped at it. This is about 15 minutes drive from Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. But the mountain did not open till 6th of December this year. But it was easy enough to go to world famous Lake Louise to ski. It was also just a two hour drive from Revelstoke which is even better for skiing than Lake Louise. This is just the place for a bit of winter relaxation. Ultra clean and everything was again smack up to date, with flat screen cable TVs in every room. Good enough wi-fi signal to keep up with whats going on back in the office. Free world wide telephone system is installed if you need to brag to the folks back home. I'd like to bring my whole family there in the summer for a great time around the fire pit or in the hot tub. Its just beautiful!

Fantastic views, relaxing and fun lodge

G C from Los Altos, California
Date: Jul-14-2014

We stayed for 3 nights, an extended family of 4 adults and 6 children, for a summer vacation. The lodge is located ~15 min outside of Golden , surrounded by majestic mountain peaks. It is very well equipped for both relaxing and fun: 6 pairs of bikes, including one double-seat pair, an awesome huge backyard, basket ball hoop and horseshoe pit, bonfire pit, and a hot tub with views to the mountains. There were even some appliances I did not know exist (like a portable electronic score-board for games in the yard). Everything was in excellent shape. Several short hikes are available in the near area. Good to know: -- The house has three "master bedrooms", and one room with multiple beds were the kids can sleep together. -- Access to the house is through a short stairways. Minor downsides. It was hot when we stayed and there is no air conditioning. Not a big issue though.

Great Week Of Sledding In Golden/Revy

A FlipKey verified reviewer from Southern Alberta
Date: Apr-15-2014

Bear Paw Lodge was a great choice for our week of snowmobiling. The Lodge is close enough to town yet far enough to feel secure about all our equipment being safe. Bear Paw is by far the most well appointed lodge we've ever stayed in, pretty much if you need it, the lodge has it. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

Incredible view, clean well kept home, beautiful private setting, truly for myself and my family a home away from home.We really appreciate being able to talk with Jim be it by phone or e mail as if we are old friends very relaxed, trusting folks,we felt very confident after our first conversation that it would be as Jim explained. For us as a family snowmobiling has been a passion and truly the accomadations we enjoyed only made a great thing better, especially the privacy and freedom to sit in the hot tub at 8 in the morning enjoying a cup of coffee or after a days ride to soak away the aches. Also the manager Dan was awesome, the kind of fellow that you could call a friend after minutes visiting,we will return,we can't wait thank you very much.

Gods Back Yard!

DrLawn from Cambridge
Date: Feb-02-2014

I was lucky enough to be invited along on a ski holiday with a friend and we stayed in this wonderful house about half an hour's drive from the Kicking Horse resort. I've got to say this was an experience of a lifetime! Apart for the skiing at both "Kicking horse" and "Lake Louise" (just over an hour away), we got involved in some other experiences. X-country skiing was a blast but harder than I was expecting and my posterior will bear witness to that. But I had a go at sledding (we call it skidooing), we managed to this right out of the yard onto some exciting trails. But the ultimate was ice fishing! I could not believe it .. We took the sleds on a trailer a few miles up the road and then disappeared into the back woods for 10 miles. Cut a hole in the ice and caught our licence quota of five fish each, it was unbelievable. Anyway back to the Lodge .. this is something special, ideal for a family of up to ten or a group of blokes like we were. This place has all the facilities and is kept immaculate. There is a hot tub we relaxed in at the end of a hard day's skiing. Plenty of facilities for drying clothes with a very efficient laundry system. Big satellite TV. There was even a telephone to make free calls back to UK landlines. There is Wi-Fi which had a slightly intermittent attitude. One of the most important items was "Dan the Man" who takes care of the property and he has his own apartment separate in the cellar. We found he was a fountain of local knowledge and knew everybody and how to get stuff organised. So it ticked all our boxes and then some .. then to top it all you just look out of the window and see the views and you know you're in God's Back Yard. I want to go here again and again! Tips: Rent an SUV or even two from Calgary. Buy lift tickets at Coscos in Calgary. Use the Hosts on the Mountain at either Kicking horse or Lake Louise, it's a free service and they guide you around the mountain to all the best runs in the weather and they love to do it. 10am or 1pm or both!

Incredible location

A FlipKey verified reviewer from Calgary
Date: Oct-15-2013

10 of us (including 2 kids under 3) stayed at the lodge over the thanksgiving weekend. The location was breathtaking. We loved the open field, the horseshoe pit, and the bonfire area. The house itself was tastefully decorated, cozy and well maintained...a good place for a family with kids because it didn't feel "breakable". We would highly recommend this lodge.

Everything you need to relax and enjoy nature, Bear Paw Lodge is

A FlipKey verified reviewer from LaBroquerie
Date: Oct-03-2013

We had a blast staying at the lodge. There was a basketball hoop, horseshoe pit which my kids enjoyed playing for the first time. Also played some volleyball. In the evening, we relaxed around a camp fire then enjoyed the relaxing sounds of the countryside while in the hot tub. The caretaker, Dan, was extremely helpful with which trails we could take with the bikes provided by the lodge. The house had everything that you would need in a home. Lots of room if there was a large party to being cozy for a small family. For anyone who need time to relax, we definitely recommend Bear Paw Lodge.

A great family holiday resort!

A FlipKey verified reviewer from Copenhagen
Date: Sep-05-2013

We were two Danish families of 9 persons, that enjoyed Bear Paw Lodge during a five days stay in july. Excellent residence of high quality. Very comfortably with lots of Space for everyone, and equipped with all necessities for a great Holiday, including a large hot tub on the terasse. The house is beautifully located about 10 km from Golden in the countryside, with only a few neighbours in the vicinty. The view to the Mountains is spectacular. Especially in the evening when they turn almost...well golden! It was a perfect stay for a few relaxing days on our one month tour of British Colombia, and northwest us. And a good base for excursions to whitewater rafting, hiking, and the Kicking Horse skiing resort. We recommend it highly to all families.

A fantastic property in an outstanding area. We loved the space and the home from home feeling. The kitchen is stocked with every piece of equipment and utensil you could ever need. The vast outside space exceeded our expectations with volley ball net, ready made fire pit and bikes to use. The kids loved the hot tub and freedom. Our boys are 17, 16, 12 and 10 and everyone of them was catered for. Dan the caretaker was a sweetie, made useful suggestions and made us very welcome. On arrival home after a month in Canada we asked the boys what they had loved best..........Not Niagara falls or Lake Louise or anywhere else. Bear Paw Lodge of course, making s'mores on the campfire waiting for the amazing stars to come out and building a dam on the Blaeberry river at the end of the road. Thank you so much Jim for sharing this wonderful lodge with our family.

A little piece of paradise

The Johnson's from Alberta
Date: Jun-25-2013

We just had a small family reunion at Bear Paw Lodge, and it fit the bill perfectly. The house is lovely, clean and comfortable and the setting is gorgeous! It is located in a wide flat valley between two beautiful mountain chains, so we had wall to wall beautiful scenery. There is a nice large grassed yard with a fire pit and a big deck with a BBQ, as well as a hot tub and bicycles, so we were very comfortable indeed. Dan, the on-site host, was very pleasant and congenial and made our stay even nicer. Most enjoyable indeed! Thank-you!

9 of my fiends and I went to the Bear Paw Lodge for an aTV trip, needless to say we had one of the best times of our lives! Jim and Dan were there to greet us when we arrived and were extremely nice. From then on our trip just got better and better! Everything about our stay was perfect, the lodge and yard was amazing, the riding was fantastic, and the views were amazing! Dan even took us out the first day to show us where the best trails were. Becayse of our amazing experience we have decided to make this an annual trip and we may also do a snowmobile trip in the winter as you can ride right from the lodge on sleds too. Look no further this is paradise.

Fun from the start. The lodge and the surroundings are perfectly prepared for all the enjoyment you wish to have. With Dan ( the lodge manager) assistance when needed, you can find areas you could only dream of. The lodge fulfilled all our needs and the family soon settled in and felt at home enjoying what.the lodge had to offer. Also with the spacious yard being a safe area for the youngest member of the family to enjoy it was so good for the young hearted to join in with the fun!!! Golden has all the shops for general needs and with the ski hills being a little further on, you could shop on the way back to stock up for the chats of the great day and you will not believe what happened talks whilst in the hot tub??? We had a great time at Bear Paw and will cherish the memories.

Everything was explained prior to our visit. The caretaker was excellent. He was available in a moment's notice. He was helpful in places to go and things to do. Being able to walk to the river and hike was a lot of fun. The boys enjoyed the outdoors. The home was wonderful. Our children are all grown. The home gave us lots of room to have our own space, yet have lots of time together. I would definitely return. The boys are planning to get together with friends and rent the home for a week next year.

Had a great stay at the Bear Paw Lodge. Very well kept place, extremely clean. Lots of sleeping room and leisure room. The home employees stay in the basement, but you won't be able to tell they are even there. They are very friendly and keep to them selves if you want them to. Place is a little deep into the moutain side and tough to find, but secluded and beautiful once you get there. About 20 minutes from Golden. You will not be dissapointed with the Bear Paw Lodge.

A peaceful haven.

We had an amazing 3 nights at Bear Paw Lodge - much too short. Our arrival was greeted by Dan, the manager, who made us very much at home. Walking into the house was such a pleasure - every room felt like home and was so clean and welcoming. The location is just fantastic - we saw deer in the field opposite every morning and watching the sunrise and sunset on the mountains was lovely. We were two families with teenagers and the house had something to offer us all. We will definitely be back soon. Thank you Jim and Sherry for allowing us to use your home.

We had a wonderful time at Bear Paw Lodge. The location is stunningly beautiful and very quiet - exactly what we were looking for in a summer rental. The grounds are very well maintained. The kitchen is very well supplied for a gathering much larger than our own. We enjoyed an evening by the fire pit roasting marshmallows as well as walks on the property. Plenty of sleeping arrangements that more than accommodated our family with four young children (we didn't even use one of the bedrooms). Great location.

The perfect place for us

My mom really wanted to do the Burgess Shale hike for her 70th birthday, and she wanted a bunch of extended family and friends to join her. I was lucky enough to find Bear Paw Lodge via Vrbo, because it ended up being the perfect place to accommodate all of us. It was about an hour's commute from Field, the meeting location for the hike, but options in Field for accommodations were severely limited, and the town of Golden is barely any closer than the Bear Paw. And with all of that, our per-person cost was considerably less than it would have been at a crummy motel in Golden, not even counting all of the savings that we realized by cooking instead of doing restaurants for every single meal. We had ten people staying in the main house, which was exactly its capacity. (One person had to go on the spare cot, but he was a good sport about it.) And then Jim Hewlett, the owner (who lives part time in Great Britain) was nice enough to let my aunt and uncle, who had driven their car with camper trailer up from Washington, park their rig in the parking area, so that all 12 of us could be together. We made use of a lot of the amenities that the Lodge offers -- nice big kitchen (it's a lot of fun, and it saves a lot of money, to cook in these big group situations), a huge grill out on the deck, a fire pit out in the yard for making 'smores, a few bikes, and the hot tub. The setting is absolutely beautiful, with snowcapped peaks all around you. You're a few miles off the Trans-Canada, so you definitely get a secluded feeling. And there's also a live-in caretaker who lives in a ground-floor apartment below the main house, so that is how everything is well cared-for, and you know that there's someone around to help out if you need anything (although really we didn't, in the end). And while I never actually met Jim Hewlett, the owner, we e-mailed back and forth. Very helpful and friendly guy. Highly recommended.

No surprises, very comfortable, well supplied and maintained.

We arrived on a Wednesday at about 1 PM. The house was ready and the care taker made us feel welcome. What a great place. The yard was maintained perfectly. The fire pit was big enough to cook a full sized pig if we had one. The home was warm and comfortable. The kitchen was supplied with any cooking or baking tool you needed. The bedrooms are roomy and the beds were very comfortable. As time went on the care taker made us feel more and more at home. If you talk to her real nice she might come up with a fresh pie and home made bread. We loved the home and property and would definitely recommend it.

This is by far the nicest vacation rental we have stayed in!!! From the location, to the lodgings...I can not say enough about how lovely it is, nested in a valley in the rockies. Views are breathtaking. The home itself is beautiful and very well equipped and extremely well looked after. Upon arrival we were greeted by Dan and Cathy.....they are so knowledgeable about the area and so helpful, which is a definite bonus! What I appreciated most is the owner's kept in contact with us, before and after our trip. My family and I would like to say that this is the closet to a home away from home that you can get!!

We are all back from our lovely vacation, and everyone loved this home. We couldn't believe how well stocked the kitchen was. We had brought many things (such as blender, tea pot, children plastic cups/bowls/plates...) only to find everything was already there! Beds and pillows were comfortable. Bedrooms were large with high ceilings and plenty of closet space. Plenty of bathroom linens provided. The hot tub was used each day! Dan was a great host. Very friendly, welcoming and helpful. He even greeted us with fresh cut lilacs. We have nothing but great things to say about Bear Paw Lodge, and we all look forward to staying there again in the future!

We had a wonderful weekend stay at the Bear Paw Lodge. It is a spacious house with a great hot tub and beautiful views. The housekeeper is nearby and was extremely friendly and accomodating. Lots of rooms and beds! It is a bit outside of town but is extremely quiet if that is what you are looking for. Thanks again so much - we really appreciated our stay!

It is hard to descibe how wonderful the Bear Paw lodge it.When you drive down the road your first time and pull into the driveway you dont know what to look at first. The house is beautiful on the ouside and then the mountain view on 3 sides is breathtaking with the sun lighting up the snow caped slopes and peakes. the colors in the later afternoon are incredible. then you walk in to a perfectly furnished home with a poster picture views out of the livng room and dining room. The early evening happy hour in the hottub is unmatched in any other place we have stayed in BC. Everything is perfect and this is our second year staying at Bear Paw and hope to return again soon. We stayed at Bear Paw with our visiting friends from England and what a great time we had. We wanted a place near the Wolf Refuge Centre and we wondering just what we picked - having only stayed at b&b's and hotels. Were we surprised. In addition to magnificient scenery we were rewarded with an exceptionally well stocked kitchen and bathroom. The serenity of the setting -with the odd wolf song to be heard at nite made for a memorable experience. Highly recommended. P.S. Groceries and vino available nearby at Golden

Had a superb long weekend at the lodge. We were made very welcome by Dan the resident concierge, who made sure everything we needed was to hand. The lodge was very comfy and had a very homely feel. Being surrounded by beautiful mountains was the icing on the cake. We look forward to checking in next year!
